2021년 하반기였습니다. 논술을 보고 수능을 본 그 무렵입니다. 웹에서 광고 배너를 봤습니다. 대성마이맥과 대성학원이 함께 여는 제1회 수학강사 공개선발대회, 매쓰코리아. 강사를 하고 있었으니 지원했습니다. 거창한 계기는 없었습니다. 배너 하나였습니다.
네 번의 관문
선발은 네 단계였습니다. 서류, 지필시험, 강의 영상, 그리고 현장에서 문제를 풀어 보이는 강의와 심층 면접. 이렇게까지 꼼꼼하게 뽑는구나 싶었습니다. 두 달 전 제가 본 논술은 한 번의 시험이었는데, 강사를 뽑는 데는 네 번의 관문이 있었습니다.
킬러 문제
마지막 관문은 현장 시강이었습니다. 킬러 문제 하나를 풀어 보이는 것. 미적분 문제였습니다. 문제는 하루쯤 전에 미리 받았던 것으로 기억합니다. 앞에는 대표를 비롯해 열 명이 넘는 분들이 앉아 있었습니다. 풀이는 넓은 대상이 쉽게 이해할 수 있게 짰습니다. 가장 잘하는 학생 한 명이 아니라, 가장 많은 학생이 알아들을 수 있게. 학생 대신 심사위원, 교실 대신 심사장. 문제를 푸는 것은 같았습니다.
결과
2021년 12월 29일에 시상식이 있었습니다. 1위는 제가 아니었습니다. 저는 차순위 입상자 두 명 중 한 명이었습니다. 상금 500만 원과 트로피. 결과는 전화와 문자로 받았습니다. 1위에게는 상금 1억 원과 대성마이맥 인강 런칭이 걸려 있었습니다. 그 무대는 그때 제 것이 아니었습니다.
결과를 들었을 때 든 생각은 두 문장이었습니다. 내가 국내 최고의 교육기업에서 선발됐구나. 열심히 하자. 아이들 눈에는 다른 회사가 더 위일 수도 있다는 것을 압니다. 그래도 그날 제 마음은 그랬습니다. 1위가 아니라는 것은 그다음 문제였습니다.
무대
대성마이맥 강의는 올해 초, 회사 임원들과 논의해 확정됐습니다. 2026년 12월부터 고1·고2 내신과 수능 수학을 강의합니다. 공통수학1과 2, 대수, 미적분Ⅰ, 확률과 통계. 2028학년도 수능부터 수학은 대수·미적분Ⅰ·확률과 통계에서만 출제됩니다. 그러니까 고1·고2 내신의 범위가 곧 수능의 범위입니다. 이 세대에게 '내신이 곧 수능'이라는 말은 구호가 아니라 제도입니다. 개인적으로는 미적분Ⅱ와 기하까지 넓힐 생각도 갖고 있습니다. 시상식에서 4년이 지났습니다. 무대는 늦게 왔습니다.
요즘 하루는 세 곳을 오갑니다. 연구실, 촬영을 하는 본사, 그리고 집. 집에 와서도 일은 이어집니다. 12월까지는 그럴 것입니다.
걱정, 그리고 하지 않을 것
런칭을 앞두고 무서운 것은 하나입니다. 아이들이 제 수업을 좋아할지, 조금은 걱정됩니다. 카메라 앞에서는 아이들의 얼굴이 보이지 않으니까요.
하지 않기로 정한 것도 하나입니다. 과장하지 않는 것입니다. 없는 효과를 있다고 말하지 않고, 방법이 노력을 대신해 준다고 말하지 않겠습니다. 수학은 올바른 방향으로 정직하게 노력한 만큼 정직하게 돌려주는 과목입니다. 그 정직함을 강사가 먼저 지켜야 합니다.
팀
Trinity MathsLab은 오래된 회사가 아닙니다. 올해 상반기에 만들었습니다. 인강 런칭을 함께할 팀이 필요했기 때문입니다. 카메라 앞에서 보이지 않는 학생을 보는 방법을 만들었고, 그것을 함께 실행할 사람들이 필요했습니다. 이름은 제가 수학을 배운 칼리지에서 가져왔습니다. 팀은 핵심 인력 위주로 줄이고 일하는 방식을 효율화했습니다. 몇 명인지는 밝히지 않겠습니다. 수업을 만드는 일, 찍는 일, 학생을 살피는 일을 나눠 맡습니다.
한 문장
무대에 서기 전의 저에게 한 문장을 보낸다면 이렇습니다. "너는 잘할 수 있어. 지금도 잘하고 있어. 포기하지 말고 그대로 계속해."

The Banner
It was the second half of 2021, around the time I sat the essay exam and then the CSAT. I saw an advertising banner on the web. MathKorea, the first open selection contest for mathematics instructors, held jointly by Daesung MyMac and Daesung Academy. I was an instructor, so I applied. There was no grand reason. There was a banner.
Four Gates
The selection had four stages: documents, a written test, a recorded lecture, and then, on site, a lecture solving a problem in front of the panel together with an in-depth interview. So this is how thoroughly they choose, I thought. The essay exam I had sat two months earlier was a single test; choosing an instructor took four gates.
The Killer Problem
The last gate was the live demonstration lecture: solving one killer problem in front of the panel. It was a calculus problem. As I recall, we were given the problem about a day in advance. Before me sat more than ten people, the company’s chief executive among them. I built the solution so that a broad audience could follow it easily. Not for the single best student, but for the greatest number of students. Judges instead of students, a judging room instead of a classroom. Solving the problem was the same.
The Result
The awards ceremony was held on 29 December 2021. First place was not mine. I was one of the two runners-up. Five million won in prize money, and a trophy. The result came by phone and by text message. Riding on first place were one hundred million won and the launch of an online course on Daesung MyMac. That stage, at that time, was not mine.
When I heard the result, two sentences went through my mind. I have been chosen by the country’s top education company. Work hard. I know that in students’ eyes another company may stand higher. Even so, that is how my heart was that day. Not being first was the question that came after.
The Stage
My Daesung MyMac course was confirmed early this year, in discussions with the company’s executives. From December 2026 I will teach grade-10 and grade-11 school-exam mathematics and CSAT mathematics: Common Mathematics 1 and 2, Algebra, Calculus I, and Probability and Statistics. Beginning with the 2028 CSAT, mathematics is examined only on Algebra, Calculus I, and Probability and Statistics. In other words, the syllabus of grade-10 and grade-11 school exams is the syllabus of the CSAT. For this generation, “school exams are the CSAT” is not a slogan. It is the system. Personally, I am also thinking of extending to Calculus II and Geometry. Four years have passed since that awards ceremony. The stage came late.
These days a day moves between three places: my office, the head office where the filming is done, and home. The work carries on after I get home. It will be like this until December.
A Worry, and One Thing I Will Not Do
With the launch ahead, there is one thing that frightens me. Whether the students will like my classes: that, a little, I worry about. In front of the camera, after all, I cannot see their faces.
There is also one thing I have decided not to do: exaggerate. I will not claim an effect that is not there, and I will not say that method can take the place of effort. Math is a subject that returns, honestly, exactly as much honest effort as is put into it in the right direction. The instructor must be the first to keep that honesty.
The Team
Trinity MathsLab is not an old company. I set it up in the first half of this year, because I needed a team to launch the online course with. I had built a way of seeing the student who cannot be seen from behind a camera, and I needed people to carry it out with me. The name comes from the college where I learned mathematics. The team has been trimmed to its core people and the way we work streamlined. How many of us there are, I will not say. Between us we divide the work of making the lessons, filming them, and looking after the students.
One Sentence
If I sent one sentence to myself before I take the stage, it would be this: “You can do this. You are doing it already. Don’t give up. Keep going just as you are.”
